Taking Augmented Reality to a New Level

Maybe you've seen it before: The red interface in the Terminator movies that the cyborgs use to analyze their surrounds; the green visuals that are overlaid when RoboCop puts on his helmet; the constant stream of information present at the corners of the screen available in most modern video games today. These applications are called heads-up displays (or HUDs for short), and while they have been fictional or artificial in nature over the past three-plus decades, you may soon start to see people walking around with their own personal HUDs if Google has its way.

Can NFC Make Print Ads More Interactive?

At the end of December 2010, Tuesdays with Tukaiz covered Near-Field Communication (NFC), an up-and-coming set of technology standards that aimed to enable short-range, "contactless" communication among phones, as well as other types of targets. At the time, NFC was starting to garner buzz in the United States, and we stated that NFC could be a disruptive force in the year to come. In 2011, NFC continued to pick up steam, as more smartphones in the U.S. market were released with NFC chips that can enable interactions and transactions via mobile devices.
